Helpful Q&As
Why do I need a physical exam when my pet gets their vaccines?
Many people have come to think of their annual visit to the vet as simply “to get their shots”; however, we know that the value we can provide from a thorough examination, discussing preventative care and early detection of illness is very significant. Because we have moved to increasing the intervals between vaccinations, there will be years when your pet is not due any vaccines at all. Seeing us for an annual wellness exam then is still very important. Preventative medicine is especially important for our patients who cannot speak for themselves; imagine waiting to go to your own doctor until someone else told you you looked sick!
Does my pet need to be vaccinated every year?
We have created our vaccine protocols to reflect the latest medical evidence. Our goal is to vaccinate pets based on lifestyle and risk, ensuring they are protected without giving vaccines more often than necessary. For example, we vaccinate adult cats for rabies every 3 years and for FVRCP every 4 years, and we vaccinate dogs for rabies, distemper and parvovirus every 3 years. Where practical, we will try to stagger these vaccines so that your pet gets as few needles as possible per visit!
