Laparoscopic Surgery
A laparoscopic spay, sometimes called a “keyhole spay” or “minimally invasive spay,” is a modern surgical technique used for spaying female dogs. Instead of making a large incision on your pet’s abdomen (as in a traditional spay), the laparoscopic approach uses a camera and special surgical instruments to perform the procedure through very small incisions.
Dr. Nigel Skinner was the first veterinarian to introduce laparoscopic spays to the Toronto area. Since 2008, he has performed hundreds of these advanced procedures—offering dogs a safer, less painful alternative to traditional spay surgery. He has also trained numerous veterinarians across the GTA, helping to elevate surgical care standards throughout the region.
Helpful Q&As
How Does Laparoscopic Spay Work?
-
Preparation
-
Your pet receives a general anesthetic and careful monitoring by the veterinary team.
-
The abdomen is clipped and prepared in a sterile manner.
-
Surgical Technique
-
The surgeon makes 2 tiny incisions (typically 5–10 mm each) in the belly.
-
A slim camera (laparoscope) is inserted through one incision, giving the surgeon a clear and enlarged view of the internal organs on a monitor.
-
Special instruments are inserted through the other incisions to safely locate and secure the ovaries for removal.
-
Removal
-
Only the ovaries are removed (ovariectomy), unless it is medically indicated to remove the uterus.
-
Blood vessels are sealed using advanced technology to control bleeding.
-
Closure
-
The small incisions are closed with just a few stitches or surgical glue.
What are the Benefits?
-
Less Pain: Smaller incisions mean less discomfort and often less need for pain medication after the procedure.
-
Faster Recovery: Most pets are back to normal activity within a few days, much faster than with traditional spay surgery.
-
Less Risk of Complications: Smaller wounds means a lower chance of infection or wound breakdown, and reduced risk of internal bleeding.
-
Minimal Scarring: The tiny incisions heal quickly and leave almost no visible scar.
-
Precise Visualization: The surgeon has a very clear and magnified view of the organs, allowing for increased accuracy and safety.
Aftercare and What to Expect
-
Your pet will go home the same day of the procedure.
-
Exercise and activity should be limited for typically 1-2 days following the laparoscopic spay.
-
Monitor the small incisions for any redness, swelling, or discharge.
