November 2025
Hello and welcome to the November edition of the Shoreview Current!
Whether you’re a longtime client or new to our Shoreview family, we’re excited to share tips, updates, and stories to help you keep your pets happy, healthy, and thriving. From the latest in preventive care to fun pet stories and clinic news, consider this your monthly dose of all things furry and four-legged.
We’re thrilled to announce our 2nd annual Santa Paws Photo Extravaganza, happening Sunday, November 30th from 1 PM to 3 PM!
Bring your furry friend for a festive photo with Santa himself — who may look suspiciously familiar to our patients. Rumour has it, Santa has a charming New Zealand accent and an uncanny knowledge of veterinary medicine… but we’ll let you decide if Dr. Skinner and Santa have ever been spotted in the same room at the same time. 😉
We’re asking for a minimum donation of $10 (or more if you wish) in support of the Shoreview Community Fund, and we’ll match every donation with $5. Together, we’ll be helping three incredible local causes:
❤️ The Bluffs Food Bank
🐶 Last Litter Dog Rescue
🐱 Team Cat Rescue
Proceeds from our Shoreview Leash sales ($25 each) will also go toward the fund — so your pet can look fabulous and give back.
At Shoreview, we believe in supporting the community that supports us, and what better way to do that than with a little holiday cheer, wagging tails, and maybe a “ho ho ho” with a Kiwi twang?
📞 Appointments are by phone only, and last year’s spots disappeared faster than Santa’s cookies! Clients get first priority before we open to the public, so don’t wait! Call 416-485-PETS (7387) to reserve your spot.
Last year we raised $500 for our community fund — let’s see if we can top that this year!
🍂 Mild Weather Means Fleas & Ticks Are Still Active: Is Your Pet Protected? 🍂
It’s that time of year when we expect to be brushing off the last of the leaves, bundling up, and finally saying goodbye to bugs for a while. But this fall has other plans.
Here in Ontario, the mild weather has given fleas and ticks a reason to stick around. Instead of slowing down, these tiny hitchhikers are making the most of the lingering warmth, turning cozy wool coats and living rooms into their winter getaways.
At Shoreview Veterinary, we’ve still been seeing patients with itchy, unexpected flea and tick visitors – even this late in the season. In fact, we removed more ticks in October than any other month this year! It’s a reminder that prevention isn’t just for summer; it’s a year-round act of love that keeps your pets safe, comfortable, and pest-free.
So before you cross “flea meds” off the list until spring, take a quick peek at your supply. In Ontario, flea and tick season doesn’t really end anymore.
What you can do
1. Check your pet’s supply of flea and tick preventive. If you’re running low or it’s been a few months since your last purchase, now is a good time to reorder.
2. Keep using prevention consistently – even into the colder months. Fleas can survive indoors year-round and ticks may remain active when temperatures are above ~4 °C.
3. Monitor your pet for signs such as: scratching more than usual; visible ticks on the skin; dark “flea-dirt” specks (which look like pepper) near the tail base.
4. Keep your home and yard part of the prevention plan: vacuum regularly, wash pet bedding, and maintain lawn / trimmed vegetation to reduce habitats for fleas and ticks.
