💉 Your Pet’s “Invisible Shield”: A Guide to Core & Lifestyle Vaccines 💉
We get it – vaccines can feel like a lot. Different names, different schedules… and a pet who’s just here for the snacks. But each one plays an important role in protecting your pet from serious diseases.
Let’s break down what each vaccine actually does and why it matters. 👇
🐶 For Dogs
DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza)
Think of this as your dog’s core starter pack.
- Distemper: A serious, often fatal virus affecting the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems
- Adenovirus: Can cause liver disease and respiratory illness
- Parvovirus: Highly contagious and life-threatening, especially in puppies
- Parainfluenza: A contributor to kennel cough
👉 These diseases are widespread and can survive in the environment, meaning even a quick sniff outside can pose a risk.
Rabies
This one is not just important – it’s legally required.
- A fatal virus that affects the nervous system
- Can be transmitted to humans and other animals
- Spread through bites from infected wildlife
👉 Rabies vaccination protects your pet and your community.
Leptospirosis
A rising concern in urban and suburban areas (yes – even in the city!).
- Spread through water contaminated by wildlife urine
- Can cause kidney and liver failure
- Zoonotic (can spread to humans)
👉 Dogs don’t need to swim in lakes to be at risk – puddles, parks, and backyards can all be sources.
Bordetella (Kennel Cough)
The “social dog” vaccine 🐾
- Protects against a highly contagious respiratory infection
- Spread in places like dog parks, daycare, grooming salons, and boarding facilities
👉 If your dog has a busy social calendar, this one’s a must.
🐱 For Cats
FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)
Your cat’s core protection bundle:
- Rhinotracheitis & Calicivirus: Causes upper respiratory infections (sneezing, eye/nose discharge)
- Panleukopenia: A severe, often fatal virus affecting the immune system
👉 Even indoor cats should be protected – viruses can hitch a ride inside on shoes, clothing, or hands.
Rabies
Just like dogs – required and essential.
- Fatal and zoonotic
- Indoor cats are still at risk if they ever escape or encounter wildlife
Feline Leukemia
A big one for cats with any outdoor exposure or unknown history.
- Spread through close contact (grooming, shared bowls/litterboxes, bites)
- Weakens the immune system, which can result in infections, eye conditions, seizures, and other ailments
🐾 Why Vaccines Matter More Than Ever
Many of these diseases are still present in our environment, we just don’t see them often because vaccines work. Skipping vaccines doesn’t just put your pet at risk, it can also impact other pets in our community.
Vaccine titres are a great option for those hesitant to vaccinate on the recommended schedule*. This blood test measures the amount of antibodies your pet has against certain diseases. These are the immune system’s “memory proteins” that help the body recognize and fight infections.
* – Rabies titres do not fulfill the legal/bylaw vaccination requirement.

🚨 The “Why” Behind Our Rabies Vaccine Policy 🚨
As part of our client agreement, we require all pets in our care to be up to date on their rabies vaccine (or have a confirmed protective rabies titre).
Rabies is a serious, fatal disease that can be transmitted to people through bites or scratches – and because animals can carry and shed the virus before showing any signs of illness, we can’t always tell if a pet may be a risk just by looking at them. Veterinary teams work very closely with pets, often in situations where animals may be scared or painful, which increases the chance of accidental bites or scratches.
By ensuring pets are protected against rabies, we significantly reduce the risk of exposure for our staff, other clients, and the community. It also helps avoid very serious consequences if an incident does occur, such as strict quarantine, post-exposure requirements, or public health involvement.
Our goal is to provide safe, compassionate care for every patient – while also protecting the people who care for them.
💉 Paws & Protect: Busting Vaccine Myths 💉
Let’s be honest, vaccines generate a lot of opinions. Some helpful, some… less helpful. We hear questions every day, and we love that pet parents want to make informed choices.
So let’s clear up a few of the most common myths we hear in clinic 👇
❌ Myth #1: “My pet stays indoors, so they don’t need vaccines.”
✅ The truth: Even indoor pets aren’t in a bubble. Viruses can travel into our homes on our shoes, clothing, and hands, which means anyone entering the home (family, friends, contractors, etc) can unknowingly introduce viruses that put pets at risk.
Plus, some diseases (like rabies) are a legal requirement, as well as a safety net for everyone in your household.
❌ Myth #2: “Vaccines can give my pet the disease.”
✅ The truth: Vaccines are designed to train the immune system, not infect it. Think of them like the personal trainer for your pet’s immunity. Most modern vaccines use killed or modified viruses that can’t cause illness in healthy pets.
Some pets may feel a little sleepy or sore afterward (just like us), but serious reactions are rare, and we’re always here to guide you if you’re concerned.
❌ Myth #3: “They had vaccines as a puppy/kitten, so they’re set for life.”
✅ The truth: Immunity fades over time. Those early vaccines are just the beginning; boosters keep protection strong as your pet grows and their lifestyle changes.
Think of it like you are updating your pet’s protection plan, not a one-and-done deal.
❌ Myth #4: “Vaccines aren’t necessary anymore—these diseases are rare.”
✅ The truth: They’re rare because we vaccinate. Diseases like parvovirus, distemper, and feline panleukopenia haven’t disappeared – they’re just kept in check by good vaccination coverage.
When fewer pets are vaccinated, those diseases come back (and they come back fast).
❌ Myth #5: “Too many vaccines will overwhelm my pet’s system.”
✅ The truth: Your pet’s immune system handles far more every day. From sniffing the sidewalk to licking the floor, pets are constantly exposed to bacteria and viruses.
Vaccines are a controlled, safe way to prepare their immune system, not overwhelm it. If you have concerns about your pet’s ability to tolerate multiple vaccinations in one visit, we are always happy to split them across several visits instead (at no additional cost).
🩵 The Bottom Line
Vaccines aren’t about overdoing it, they’re about protecting what matters most: your pet, your family, and the wider community.
Every pet is different, and we’re always happy to tailor a vaccine plan that fits your pet’s lifestyle perfectly – no pressure, just good medicine.
